Family Shield Computer Filter

Below is a note from Bill Mulholland regarding the free computer filter service that he shared at our last corporate meeting.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

If your not tech savvy and you want to get some protection up and running as quickly as possible, follow these instructions here for the Family Shield. It will ask you for an email address, but immediately below you can click “continue setup without signing up” and it won’t make any difference. If you don’t know your router login (if your not sure…you don’t) just follow the setup instructions for each computer you have. That way you have the added security of being filtered 24/7, even when the computer leaves the house. One advantage of following the router instructions as well is that all visitors who bring their own PC’s/Macs/iPods into your home will also be filtered. So to be clear, I would do the router instructions and then also the computer instructions for ANY mobile device (Laptop/iPod/iPad).

If you ARE tech savvy, start here: https://store.opendns.com/get/basic.

It gives you more options, such as whitelists & blacklists. Also, you can get a basic report of what the filter blocked, although you cannot tell which computer was blocked, most families know which one it was. You also have many more options as to what categories of websites you can block or allow. For mobile devices (Laptop/iPod/iPad) that are away from the home network a lot, you should consider the Family Shield option explained in the first paragraph. You can do both solutions at the same time.

When you think your done, go here: http://www.opendns.com/welcome If it says “Welcome to OpenDNS!” Your done!

Thanks, Chad and Bill for making this service available to us!

    Bill,
I recently set up OpenDNS at home but had a few questions, being a tech Neanderthal. How can I reach you for assistance?

    Thanks,
    Todd Hickerson

Has anyone successfully installed OpenDNS that is running Verizon FIOS? I’m finding FIOS controls the router management software and does not let me change to the settigns to OpenDNS. I contacted OpenDNS support and they were unable to help me to get to it work. Any guidance/suggestions greatly appreciated.
